On this circuit expedition, you will climb from one watershed to the next on Manaslu, at 8,163 m. Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world standing isolated and yet in the very center of the Nepalese Himalaya and the trail around this majestic peak is perhaps one of Nepal’s “Best Kept Secrets” and not only that, the area which is little traveled by tourists is ripe for the exploration of Mountain Biking. The circuit climbs up to Larke pass (5,213 m), which marks the watersheds between Buri Gandaki and Marsyangdi rivers. Not only are there exceptional views in every direction but the low-to-high range of altitudes presents such varied flora and, most noticeably, a wide cultural spectrum, including strong influences from Tibet mixing with Nepali ethnic diversity. This a an expedition style trip with simple accommodation and tough trails. This trail is only suitable for strong and skilled riders. A real challenge to be enjoyed by the pure mountain bike adventurist.

Important Trip Information


 

Depending on your expedition/trip with HOC, the transportation from either Pokhara or Kathmandu to the starting point is typically included in the price.  Please check your itinerary/ feel free to contact us for clarification.

By road: Nepal has basically two types of road transportation local and private where we mostly recommend you to use private transport with the green number plate which represents for tourist only. This is a more reliable and efficient mode of travel. Should you need a bus ticket, private car/ jeep, let us know and we can book that for you. (We can also book public transport, which is quite the adventure!)

By air (domestic): Unless stated in your trip itinerary with HOC, air travel is an add-on purchase. Should you need a flight, let us know and we can book that for you.

Generally, most adventures in Nepal are based in remote areas and high places that are unimaginably inhabited. We have different star hotels available Kathmandu and Pokhara but during your expeditions, you will stay in either or a combination of local teahouse lodges, riverside campsites/ backcountry camp spots.

Local lodges, better known as Teahouses are simple but comfortable with the availability of all the features like toilets and washing facilities.

For rafting treks and camping treks, we will set up a nice campsite where you can enjoy wonderful views and have a lovely time around a bonfire at night. Rafting camps will be set up on sandy beaches. Camping is generally made when we don’t have any hotels available to rest your weary arms/ legs and relish the beauty of the countryside in remote Nepal.

We believe that what one consumes has a significant impact on the world around us. Throughout our trips, we try our best to eat locally grown and organic foods filled with nutrition to reward our bellies for a hard earned meal. Our farm-to-table practices foster a strong connection with the local subsistence fishing/ farming communities, allowing them to reap the benefits of watershed tourism in their area.

Six factors can affect whether you suffer altitude illness and how severe it can be:

1. Rate of ascent. The faster you climb, the greater the risk, so ascend slowly.
2. Altitude gained (especially sleeping altitude). The higher you sleep, the greater the risk, so stick with the mantra, “Climb high, sleep low.”
3. Length of exposure. The longer you stay high, the greater the risk.
4. Level of exertion. Hard exertion, without rest or hydration, increases the risk, so rest and hydrate regularly.
5. Hydration and diet. High-fat and high-protein diets and dehydration may increase the risk. Stick to a high-carbohydrate diet.
6. Inherent physiological susceptibility. Some people are simply more likely to become ill, and we don’t know why.

There are three common types of altitude illness. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is the most common, and left untreated can progress into high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), which can be sudden and severe. Finally, high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) is less common but more serious.

Signs and symptoms of AMS
• Headache
• Malaise
• Loss of appetite
• Nausea, vomiting
• Disturbed sleep

Treatment of AMS
• Hydration
• Rest (light exercise is OK)
• Pain medication for headaches
• Descend if symptoms worsen or signs of HAPE or HACE develop
• Avoid sedatives

Signs and symptoms of HAPE
• Signs of AMS
• Shortness of breath on exertion, progressing to shortness of breath at rest
• Fatigue
• Dry cough progressing to wet, productive cough
• Increased heart and respiratory rate
• Rales, sounds of fluid in the lungs
• Treatment of HAPE
• Descend at least 2,000 to 3,000 feet until symptoms abate
• Oxygen may be helpful

Signs and symptoms of HACE
• Signs of AMS
• Lack of muscle coordination
• Severe lassitude
• Headache
• Nausea and vomiting
• Neurological signs such as vision disturbances, paralysis, seizures, hallucinations
• Altered mental status

Treatment of HACE
• Descent
• Oxygen

Remember, the ultimate goal is not the summit; it’s the journey. The mountain will still be there next time, and the memories will always stick with you.

Travel Insurance is compulsory for all HOC guests. We recommend that you check the information before you travel and make sure your plan covers you for all of the areas of your interest. (Should you request a recommendation for a plan, please contact us.) Before embarking on any of our trips, you will sign a waiver stating your policy information, number and expiration of your traveler’s insurance. –Make sure your plan covers everything in your itinerary! 

 

We recommend that you check your government’s advice for their latest travel information before you travel any of the places and make sure your travel insurance covers you for all areas your itinerary covers. You better keep your passport and money in the neck wallet or money belt when you travel for the safety of your passports, air tickets, and money. You don’t need your expensive jewelry to be with you on a travel so keep it at home. Your leader will accompany you on all the activities, however if you have an own interest on different activities on a leisure time you can pursue but remember this activities you undertake are not the part of our trip itinerary.

We have an aim to connect people to people no matter from which place from you are. Exchanging culture and learning about each other’s tradition with the heart full of respects. It is important to remember that what may be acceptable behavior, dress and language in your own country, may not be appropriate in another.You should be considerate of Nepal’s customs, traditions, religion and culture. It is better you dress modestly and respectfully especially when entering places of worship. You can bargain at market it is more fun when you put smiles on your face. You can learn some local language and don’t hesitate to use it. Simple greetings can make a huge difference. Buy locally made products which support local artisans and helps keep traditional crafts alive. We recommend you to ask and receive permission before you take picture of people including children.

All of our River guides are well trained in first aid for backcountry conditions, where medical facilities are more than an hour away as well as well trained in swift water rescue and are prepared to enter moving water to perform “go” rescues. Through both pieces of training, they’re able to identify risks, self-rescue, and perform the various options for rescuing others, as well as the decision-making process required to chose the most appropriate rescue approach coupled with treating the victim in an efficient and resourceful manner.

We carry a first aid kit with the standard medicines permitted to be administered by SOLO Wilderness First Responders. We recommend you to consult your doctor at least 2 months prior to the beginning of your trip. We suggest protection against malaria, tetanus, typhoid etc. Acute mountain sickness is caused by going up high too fast and can be dangerous if all the warning signals are ignored. Altitude sickness has a potential to affect all the travelers from 2500m and higher. In case of serious sickness or a casualty, we will do everything to transfer you to nearest hospital. Regarding your safety the leader or your trip guide will be always around and will instruct you with every possible danger that can say hi to you on your adventure.

We provide you a highly qualified and trained leader who can manage your trip to be more wonderful. All of our guides/ naturalists have a strong grasp of the English language. They are certified in Wilderness First Aid and Swiftwater Rescue. Each of our guides have thorough knowledge regarding the ecoregions you will be exploring on your expeditions. Many of them are indigenous and have traditional knowledge and spiritual connections to the places you will be exploring too! Ask them questions about local flora/ fauna/ cultures etc.
